When you care so much about others: what they think, what they do, what you could be doing to help them, you can start to lose a part of yourself and your own identity. Caring for others is a noble and worthy thing to do, but not at your own expense. As a full-time caregiver (while having a full-time job) for my sweet aging mother, I gave up a lot of things to be available for her. While I wouldn’t change anything I did for her, and treasured that time I had with her, I also lost several connections I had to others and became codependent. Everything I did was about work or Mom. I lost a bit of me in the process.
